When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
Acts 2:1-4 NIV
50 days after Easter we reach another celebration in the church calendar: Pentecost. Pentecost Sunday is a key moment in the church when we remember those first disciples in Acts 2, who gathered together in Jerusalem shortly after Jesus’ ascension into Heaven. As these followers waited together in an upper room, they were filled with the Holy Spirit of God and went out into the streets proclaiming the Good News of Jesus. That first outpouring of the Spirit saw 3000 people come to faith and the church was born.
As we reflect on that day and the Holy Spirit, we remember that the same Holy Spirit who fell on those first disciples is the same Holy Spirit who fills us now. The events of Pentecost mean that as we navigate our way through the highs and lows of life we are not alone. As the Apostle Paul reveals through Romans 8:11, the same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead lives in us. On this Pentecost Sunday, we are embarking on a 7-day journey to celebrate this incredible truth and remind ourselves of the Church’s call to be people who carry the Presence of God to the world around us.
