You probably have noticed that our financial report is very healthy. In fact, we are in the best financial situation ever. I believe that there is a reason. Sue and I have always tithed, but SCAMPS has never tithed as a ministry – that is until about a year ago. As we were considering our budget for the coming fiscal year, one of our board members suggested that we tithe as a ministry. And so, we collectively gulped, and in act of faith we created the Barnabas Fund. Since then, ten percent of all undesignated contributions have been set aside to help other ministries, and to date, we have given away more than $14,000 to encourage various ministries in their work for Christ! And guess what? God has provided for all our needs and more! We have no debt, everyone is being paid on time, and we have money in the bank. I tell you this not to boast or to suggest that we don’t need for you to continue to give, but to testify to God’s faithfulness to His promise: Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it. This adventure in giving has a source of great joy as God has confirmed his purpose in us: You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.
George MacDonald said that “Nothing is so deadening to the divine as a habitual dealing with the outside of holy things.” To put it more simply, nothing blunts our relationship with the Father more than just going through the motions. God spoke through the prophet Hosea his view on this same idea. In 6:6 He says, For I delight in loyalty rather than sacrifice, And in the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings. Both of those quotes hang within sight of my desk, because God has constantly reminded me of the truth in those statements over the course of the last year, and I don’t dare forget them. A part of our ministry is to encourage our students to live intentionally for God: “to worship in spirit and in truth” and to really invest in knowing what God’s word says. I know from experience how easy it is to show up to a Sunday or Wednesday service and feel like I’m punching my timecard for the week...but I’m misunderstanding something big if I feel that way. God is very clear about the fact that he wants real worship and real relationship, not ritual or habit or even tradition. It has been exciting to see students who get that. It is an encouragement to see them show up with a real hunger to worship and to hear the Word taught, and to see them leave with a passion to live lives as worship to the Father. It’s awesome. Please pray that Mark and I stay sharp and intentional. Please pray that are students all catch that passion for Jesus. And pray that our university sees the true love and hope that God has offered us through His Son. Thank you for your support and for your prayers!
SCAMPS HOUSE NEWS We are enjoying a slower pace this summer, but we are managing to keep busy. Each week a small group meets for Bible Study led by Mark and Adam. We are exploring the riches of God’s grace through Paul’s letter to the Ephesians. In June, a group of students gathered for our annual Canoe Trip down Sugar Creek. The same weekend, our student leaders and staff will met for a Planning Retreat. During this overnight events we met to worship, pray, plan and seek the Lord’s guidance for the coming year. In August, a group of students, along with Mark and Sue and Adam and Erin will attend the National Student Conference. This yearly gathering, sponsored by the National Association of Christian Campus Ministries, is an important time for us to make final preparations for the coming year. Now is the time that we want to start contacting students who will be coming to school in Terre Haute this fall. There are two ways that you can help: Send us the names the names of students coming this fall to ISU, Rose-Hulman, IvyTech or St. Mary’s. Please send us as much information as you can – home address, phone, email. If you know of students going to other universities, we’ll pass that along to ministries on those campuses. Please pray that God will lead many new students to SCAMPS and other ministries this fall. Also pray that we will be able to reach out to them with the love of Jesus Christ.
